Concert Series (2010)

Classical Guitar Retreat’s Concert Series features some of the world’s most exciting and inspirational musicians. The sublime acoustics and intimacy of the Cathedral of the Isles lends itself to the classical guitar and ensures that every note will be a magical one. For four days audiences will be treated to performances of the very highest level, all taking place in one of the most unique and atmospheric settings.

The 2010 concert series features a performance from Grammy Award winner David Russell. This will be David’s first performance in Scotland for well over a decade and is not to be missed! Have a look at all the various concerts in detail below, there is a concert on each day of the Classical Guitar Retreat.

Thursday 8th July

Allan Neave directs the CGR Faculty Concert which features a variety of solo and duo performances in collaboration with Artistic Director Matthew McAllister.
Time: 9pm

Friday 9th July

Leading Scottish Lutenist James Akers will perform a recital of music for Theorbo, Lute, Baroque Guitar & Vihuela. These early instruments from the family of the guitar will sound spectacular in the Cathedral acoustic. James will also be performing repertoire from his most recent recording Thesaurus Harmonicus.

Saturday 10th July

Festival Director Matthew McAllister launches his new solo album Bach & Brouwer during the first half of this concert and is joined after the Interval by members of Frevo Quartet , flautist Aisling Agnew, violinist Feargus Hetherington & bassist Douglas Whates.

Sunday 11th July

Classical Guitar Retreat is delighted to welcome David Russell back to Scotland to give his first recital here for well over a decade. World renowned for his superb musicianship and inspired artistry, David has earned the highest praise from audiences and critics alike. In recognition of his great talent and international career, he was named a Fellow of The Royal Academy of Music in London in 1997 and won a prestigious Grammy Award in 2005.

Sunday 11th July

It’s the turn of the students to take to the stage under the watchful gaze of Peter Stewart. Perfomances from the CG Retreat Guitar Orchestra, budding soloists and newly formed ensembles are all expected!

Location

The Isle of Cumbrae is easily reached from Largs by making a short 10-minute ferry trip.
There are excellent transport connections to Largs from Glasgow and its environs. Largs is around an hour by road, rail, car or bus from Glasgow city centre, Glasgow International and Glasgow Prestwick airports.
